Brief Introduction of Department
Co-supported by Peking University
and Chinese Academy
of Sciences, the Department of Astronomy at Peking
University was established in June
2000 and became a part of School of
Physics in May 2001. It used to be an Astronomy Division in the
Department of Geophysics in 1960-2000. The Department currently offers both
the undergraduate and graduate programs to students who wish to study
astronomy and astrophysics. There are 13 faculty members in the Department,
including 9 full professors, 2 research professors and 2 associate
professors. Main research programs include: cosmology and physics of
galaxies; active galactic nuclei and high energy astrophysics; physics of
interstellar medium, planets and stars; particle astrophysics; astrophysical
technology and methods.
The department works closely
with the newly-built Kavli Institute for
Astronomy and Astrophysics in various academic activities and training of
students.
