Brief
Introduction
|
The Department of Astronomy at Peking University
was formally established in June 2000 and became a part of
School of Physics in May 2001. It used to be the Astronomy
Section in the Department of Geophysics for more than 40 years.
Since 1960s, several hundreds of students have graduated from
the Astronomy Section and the Department of Astronomy. Most
of them, including 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of
Sciences and 4 directors of astronomical observatories, are
the leading scientists now in the Chinese astronomical community
and have made great contributions to the development of modern
Chinese astronomy. After the year 2000, the Department of
Astronomy has entered a rapidly developing era and is currently
co-supported by the Peking University and the Chinese Academy
of Sciences. The Department has undertaken a series of
significant reformations in teaching, training and research,
and made great efforts to strengthen the cooperation with
research institutes in the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The Department of Astronomy offers both undergraduate
and graduate programs to students who wish to study astronomy
and astrophysics, as well as postdoctoral positions to young
scientists. Together with the CAS-PKU joint Beijing Astrophysics
Center, the Department is running a vigorous visitor program
for both domestic and oversea astrophysicists. There are 12 faculty members in the
Department, including
7 full professors and 5 associate professors. Main research
programs currently ongoing are: cosmology and physics of galaxies; active galactic
nuclei and accretion physics, high energy astrophysics; radio
astronomy; molecular clouds and star formation; gas nebulae
physics; astrophysical technology and methods.
