Brief Introduction

Co-supported by Peking University and Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Department of Astronomy at Peking University was established in June 2000 and became a part of School of Physics in May 2001. It used to be an Astronomy Section in the Department of Geophysics in 1960-2000. The Department currently offers both the undergraduate and graduate programs to students who wish to study astronomy and astrophysics. There are 10 faculty members in the Department, including 6 full professors, 1 faculty research fellow and 3 associate professors. Main research programs include: cosmology and physics of galaxies; active galactic nuclei and high energy astrophysics; physics of interstellar medium, planets and stars; particle astrophysics; astrophysical technology and methods.

The department works closely with the newly-built Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics in various academic activities and training of students.
